Spag bog standard Italian

On Saturday evening we ate at Buon Amici. Not bad. 4 out of 5 on the quality/value equation. Good solid Italian fare. Escalope & Pollo fifteen different ways, a wine list with numerous Chiantis, and there I was enjoying Spaghetti Bolognese as if it was still 1978 and I had a napkin tucked under my chin.
It was very nice Spag bog but... I couldn't help wondering, if this is St Albans' premier Italian restaurant*, is all really right with the world? No wonder so many commuters chose Surrey. Thameslink are making South West Trains look efficient and the best Saturday-night-Italian you can get is still, well, average.**
* some people believe this although I would personally argue for Verdi's Trattoria on Clarence Road.
** If you don't have to commute to London, Bedford has an excellent selection of Italian eateries. Try Mama Mia's on Kimbolton Road. Far above average.
In St Albans there is of course, Zizzi or The Cricketers if you want a reasonable Italian style pizza.
And Carluccio's if you want some sun-dried tapenade something in a hurry. Grin and eat it.

Somebody should tell them their web page isn't Firefox friendly. The main flag doesn't load because they are using custom Microserf, er, soft code.

Tsk.

St Albans was one of those places that used to have a sizeable Italian community (mostly living around Fleetville). You would think that this would have been parlayed into a better choice of Italian food.
I wonder if they all moved out. Must look into that some time.
