City without a cinema

The triumvirate of Watford, Hatfield and Hemel all bloom with multiplexes yet going to the cinema for the St Albans resident involves uncessary travel hassle and environmental damage as there is no cinema in the city itself.

Meanwhile the ongoing debate about why there is no cinema in St Albans continues with city councillors proclaiming they'll be dead by the time the cinema arrives. Such real life melodrama isn't a patch on a good film and bucket of popcorn though, despite best efforts to recreate The Full Monty in the city centre on a Saturday night.

Until a new multiplex opened in 2004 Sunderland (pop. 280k) had the honour of being the UK's largest city without a cinema. Does St Albans (city pop. 82k) now unwittingly hold this crown?

Unrelated to this post, but...

"Cover The Butter looks really interesting. Let me know when you'll be in the UK in case you are interested in coming along to any RNA events."

Hi Kate!
Can you tell me something about the RNA events? I do hope to be in the UK next year.

Also, the Middleton you mention, is that near Sutton Coldfield/Tamworth?

Hi Carrie
I don't think the events calender is up for next year yet, but the RNA website is here fyi: http://www.rna-uk.org/
Drop me an email when you know when you'll be in town.

Middleton: there is a few Middletons in England and mine is a fictional village in Wiltshire. I used the name because it makes me think 'Middle England'. :) The closest town is the fictional town of Stickleton, vaguely based on the real town of Devizes.
